Marquis Count Accused of Treason
The Marquis de Mars, in his time as ultimate authority of Mars and her moons, has weathered many storms, scandals, and accusations. Despite that, what is before him today may only be surpassed by the rebellion he fights on Phobos. Armand de Chambrun de La Motte, Count of the major Martian region Cratère de la Magnitude, has been accused of high treason by the lady Félicité de Rohan, Countess of the Château de la Reine region of Mars. Countess Félicité is a distant relative of Marquis Ludwig II, a niece by marriage of his mother’s sister. She rules a small and flat region of Northern Mars from the major dome city of Carcassone. It is reported that Marquis Ludwig II has little love for the countess, who some have claimed is ‘petulant, indulgent, and controlling’. Armand de Chambrun de La Motte, conversely, was once one of the Marquis’ closest friends. The Marquis and Count Armand have reportedly known one another since their childhood, growing up on Mars together. Count Armand’s father was one of the Marquis Ludwig I’s earliest supporters, and later one of his military generals before he was killed during the Crucible of Profit in 360 ACE. After Marquis Ludwig II stepped into his title, he and Armand had a falling-out of unknown origin. Endless rumors abound as to the source of the argument, speculating competition for the same lover to disagreements about how the Marquis rules and lives. The only thing known for certain is that the young Marquis sent his friend to rule as Count of Cratère de la Magnitude on the other side of the red planet, keeping him far from the epicenter of power on Mars.
Today, just six hours ago, during a public televised appearance for her region, Countess Félicité leveled a startling accusation against Count Armand. She has claimed to have undeniable proof that Count Armand has been secretly assisting the rebels on Phobos, funneling credits, food, and even weapons and soldiers to the budding rebellion. Countess Félicitè included in her accusation that Count Armand plans to move himself and and his family to Phobos in open rebellion against the Marquis after secretly helping the moon to establish its own independence. This public accusation was released alongside a formal submitted request to the SRM for adjudication in the matter to determine if Count Armand is guilty of treason. Two hours later, Count Armand’s home in his capital city of Bourges was reportedly surrounded by SRM security officers and the count was escorted to the SRM embassy nearby. Conflicted reports have been made regarding whether Armand was formally arrested, or simply brought into custody for his own safety.
As of now, Marquis Ludwig II has not issued a public statement on this incident, and the situation is still unfolding.
