Starset RPG Milestones: How They Work

The appeal of tabletop roleplaying games is their limitlessness.

Massive multi-player online games (MMOGs) like Helldivers 2 or Desitny 2 restrict you to pre-developed landscapes, while tabletop RPGs like Starset provide a book-bound framework to explore as far as your imagination can take you. This advantage can also be a downfall, though.

The advantage of MMOG's pre-programmed landscapes is interface. Players all meet in the same location, share the same adventures, and participate in a common experience most tabletop RPGs cannot emulate.

For years, publishers have tried to navigate this limitation by publishing encyclopedic world guides, like Greyhawk, Dragonlance, or Faerun. But in reality, these books are often unwieldy and out of date—full of good ideas, but hard to utilize and far divorced from players' own stories.

Until now.

Starset RPG Milestones.

With the launch of Starset RPG 2nd Edition, Hoodwink Games is relaunching Starset's Living Lore with a brand-new format: MILESTONES.

Starset Milestones are narrative events announced each month that give players fresh opportunities to affect the evolving lore of the Starset universe. Each event has two in-game options, and players vote for which they'd prefer.

Over the course of the month, players can meet with their squad, play game sessions, submit gameplay reports to our website, or even post comments and short stories urging other players to vote for their preferred result.

At the end of the month, the votes are tallied.

Outcomes.

The winning option is canonized as an in-game event and announced the following month as an OUTCOME. Each Outcome brings its own consequences, such as new NPCs, new rules, new encounters, new items, or new events.

Outcomes are bite-sized chunks of lore with real mechanical consequences. These little pieces of lore are easy for Overlords to work into campaigns and work to keep the Starset universe fresh and fierce for all players.

Plus, players around the world are affected by the same outcomes every month. For example, Starset's starting session takes place in New Detroit, along with the first two Milestones released in November 2025. That means every Overlord who uses the starting session can incorporate these new events, and every player around the world will be affected by the same events as if they were all in the city together.
