Vampyr Revealed!
The aristocracies of our solar system are, to most, an impenetrable mob of cliques, gossip, assassinations, and misguided loyalties. The majority of people will never gain enough influence to even be recognizable in their own city, let alone their planet or the solar system at large. But for a determined few, breaking into this world is a dream that sometimes comes true. Lady Lysandra Aurelian was one of those few. She came from a family of no status, laborers who work in the factories and mines of South-Western America. Her first claim to fame came when she was only 16 years old and she secured a license from the Revelers to allow her to sing in a small but popular theater for the upper crust of Monangol City. Once her enchanting voice was discovered, Aurelian’s popularity grew quickly, and she soon found herself welcome among the elites who would once have stepped on her on the streets without breaking stride.
Aurelian has spent the last twenty years working to belong and proving herself along the way. She has survived a marriage and a divorce, and continued in her resolute mission to belong and then to surpass those she associates with. Two weeks ago it would have been nearly impossible to secure tickets to one of her concert performances. Now, as the public is apt to do, the beautiful Aurelian has been turned upon. On October 14th, Aurelian’s connection to a small, space-bound group known primarily as the Covenous was revealed to the solar system. Despite Aurelain’s long-standing reputation for integrity among her peers, she has now found herself under constant analysis. The SRM has seized her assets, frozen her accounts, and taken her into custody awaiting a judicial hearing. A team of mindless SRM bureaucrats are reportedly “carefully investigating her political relationships” to determine if she is guilty of “infecting others with this dangerous ideology". As always, the SRM shows itself to be a controlling bureaucracy incapable of tolerating unique perspectives and experiences. There is no evidence that Aurelian has endangered anyone by her beliefs, and the beauty and power that she has displayed in her career are evidence of the good she has done for her culture.
The Covenous group was once believed to be a space-faring myth, full of blood-thirsty and violent people. The reality has turned out to simply be a group of devoted women earnestly seeking salvation from the end of the world. They are no different than the Eris Engineers who seek to survive The Great Dimming through technology, or Sept of Io followers who seek to survive through their faith. I challenge my readers to look at Aurelian's actions and her beliefs, with an open mind. After all, she is one of us, and any of us may one day find ourselves in the same position as her: alone and afraid, facing down the bureaucratic monstrosity known as the SRM for no other reason than daring to hold a unique perspective and a new belief.
